About Napier City
![]()
Napier - the city centre and Pacific Ocean
The city enjoys some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. Because of the location on the east coast of New Zealand, it has a relatively dry Mediterranean-type climate. There are beautiful walks in the surrounding mountain ranges such as the Kaweka Range.

Art Deco Napier
Napier's major tourist attraction is the Art Deco city itself. Architecture enthusiasts from around the world come to celebrate Art Deco Weekend every year in February. Napier's architecture is strikingly different from any other city.
Napier is known as the Art Deco city. The Art Deco style was very popular for its clean, simple lines. Many of the buildings are influenced by the Art Deco style from the 1920s to the 1930s. Each year in February many people from all over the world come to Napier to celebrate the Art Deco Weekend. They dress in Art Deco costumes, drive through the city in vintage cars and engage in the festivities while remembering the 1930s. ![]()
After an earthquake in 1931 the whole city centre of Napier was rebuilt simultaneously. In many ways it resembles a film set as it has whole streets of 'in period' buildings, but it is a real city and the buildings are original.
With all this lovely city has to offer, Napier is the ideal location for students to study. |
